Spring End Options
When it comes to spring ends, you have a variety of options. In some cases, both ends will match, but it is also possible to have two different end types on the same spring. Your choice will depend on the job your spring is required to do. In choosing the right end type or types for your springs it is helpful to understand each end type and how they function.
Compression Spring End Types
The typical compression spring end type options include open or closed. The most commonly used type is a closed or squared off end type. In the case of closed ended springs, the space between the last two coils is minimized so that the coils touch, and it sits flat. Open ended springs, however, are not squared off and tend to need some form of support, such as a rod. Closed ends are more common, whereas open ends are used for specific applications or for longer cut-to-length stock springs.
As a secondary process, both closed and open ends can be ground down. Grinding the ends of compression springs create a flat surface to reduce buckling and increase stability. Typically, compression springs with larger wire diameters and closed ends are ground down, while smaller wire diameters and open-ended compression springs only need grinding in specific applications. Keep in mind, grinding is a secondary operation, which increases the cost.

Hooks and loops are the primary end type options for extension springs. Loops are fully closed all the way around, whereas hooks have a gap between the body of the spring and the end of the hook. Stock extension springs are usually made with loop ends, but with a simple cut, a hook can be made. Hooks and loops are available in a few different style options to match application needs. The most widely used end styles for extension springs are crossover, machine, side, and double loop ends. W.B. In the case of torsion springs, the most common and versatile end type is a plain straight leg, with no bends. Customized designs are available for applications that require a torsion spring with bends. A sample, print, photo, or sketch is all that a good spring manufacturer will require to determine the torsion spring design that is needed.
