What does the direction of wind for a torsion spring mean?
The direction of the wind can be confusing but is important in the use of torsion springs. The load should cause the springs to rotate in the same direction in which it is coiled. Below shows this can be either right hand or left hand.

How do you determine the relationship of the ends on a torsion spring in the free position?

This is the number of degrees of rotation from the free position required to rotate the legs to be in the 360 degree picture below. The four most common are shown below.
