Springs may seem simple enough, but in terms of design, finding the right type of spring and getting it made to the proper specifications for the application is critical. If any spring measurements are incorrect, spring failure can occur, causing serious and expensive problems. Thanks to the Advanced Spring Design Calculator (ASD7), the process of designing the right spring does not have to be difficult.
ASD7 is a spring design calculator jointly developed by Universal Technical Systems and the Spring Manufacturers Institute (SMI). This helpful tool merges engineering expertise with customized calculations to aid manufacturers in the design of effective springs for any application. This calculator aids manufacturers in the development of:
- Extension springs
- Spiral forms
- Torsion springs
- Garter springs
- Snap rings
- Torsion bars
ASD7 is created in a completely graphical environment, which includes convenient, automatic unit conversion. The interface also includes quick access to dynamic plots and reports. An expandable springs materials database provides a profile system for saving and incorporating frequently used input data sets, as well as exportable DXF compression springs drawings.
This spring design calculator allows for the input of specifications to find spring rates and loads. Springs designs can also reverse engineered for any variable of interest. Cylindrical and conical springs can be combined in series (stacked or continuous) and in parallel (nested).
ASD7 also catches and alerts designers about potential design flaws such as settling or buckling, and also provides SMI acceptable tolerances and calculates maximum safe loads.
