Tension Springs 101

Also called extension springs, tension springs provide extended force when the spring is pulled apart from its original length.These springs are wound helical coils that are wrapped tightly together to create tension. Most often they have hooks, loops, or end coils at both ends of the body, which enable them to be attached to other components. When these attached items move apart, the tension spring pulls them back together.

Tension springs oppose extension through the manner in which they are wound. Spring tension is controlled by how tightly the spring is coiled.The tension of the spring is determined by the load requirements of the application.

Used in applications ranging from small springs for electronic devices to large farm machinery, tension springs are available in a broad range of sizes. Other common end products that rely on tension springs include trampolines, garage door assemblies, vise-grips, washing machines, and toys.

Tension springs end styles are specified to suit the application they will serve. Varying the diameter of the coil, wire thickness, and length of the spring enables these springs to manage a variety of loads and meet diverse application requirements.
